Ban Calf-Roping at Texas Rodeo Events to Prevent Animal Cruelty
The Issue
I am a concerned citizen who recently attended a rodeo in Texas, expecting a fun, family-friendly evening. What I encountered, however, was a practice deeply unsettling and outright abusive to innocent animals. The event showcased calf-roping, a 'sport' that subjects baby cows to blatant cruelty, causing injuries, whiplash, and in some unfortunate cases, even death.
Myself and my friends were all horrified at the disturbing 'sport' and upon leaving, I heard several men say "That was fun, but that baby cow thing was horrible."
Precious young calves are being brutally roped and dragged for entertainment. This exercise causes severe stress to the calf, and the high-impact abrupt stops can easily lead to injuries like twisted necks, back damage, internal injuries, broken bones, or even death. This disturbing spectacle of forcing docile creatures into terrified flight is, undeniably, a form of animal abuse.
Calf-roping is already banned in several countries, states, and cities, due to the clear cruelty and abuse.
- It is banned in Rhode Island, Baltimore, St. Petersburg, parts of California and Louisiana, as well as some localities in Australia, Brazil, and Canada, and nationally in the United Kingdom, Germany, and The Netherlands.
We need to hold the organizers, such as Texas Rodeo company, accountable for enabling this primitive and cruel spectacle. Their sponsors, like HEB, should be aware that they indirectly fund distressing acts of abuse, and we call upon them to take a clear stand against animal cruelty.
Calf-roping belongs to a brutal bygone era and has no place in a civilized society that values compassion and humane treatment of animals over cruel, antiquated forms of entertainment.
To create a safe and cruelty-free environment for animals across Texas, we urge you to endorse this call to ban calf-roping at all rodeo events. Your signature is a stand against animal cruelty and a step closer to a better world for all animals.
