The Issue

Recent studies have shown that exposure to blue-rich light at night is linked not only to disturbing natural sleep patterns but also to enhancing the risk of severe health conditions such as cancer and other chronic diseases. The widespread use of blue-rich LED lighting in public spaces could be inadvertently harming the health and well-being of millions.

The circadian rhythm, our internal body clock, plays a crucial role in the regulation of sleep and hormone production. At night, the natural environment is devoid of blue light, signalling to our bodies that it’s time to rest. Modern lighting, especially LEDs with blue-rich light, disrupts these signals, leading to an increased risk of health complications. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization, classifies night shift work as a probable human carcinogen due to circadian disruption.

Moreover, research by institutions such as Harvard Medical School highlights the negative impacts of blue light exposure at night, citing increased risks for breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. The American Medical Association also acknowledges the adverse health effects of nighttime blue light exposure and has called for minimizing blue-rich lighting.

Public spaces equipped with such lighting are not only impacting residents' health adversely but are also disregarding the scientific evidence that advises against its usage. Cities across the globe need to reassess their nighttime lighting policies urgently to prevent further health repercussions.

In addition to public spaces, it is crucial that domestic lighting products containing blue-rich LEDs carry health warnings advising consumers against their nighttime usage. These warnings would guide people towards more health-conscious choices and amplify awareness of the potential dangers involved.

We are calling for an immediate ban on the use of blue-rich LED lighting in public spaces during nighttime and the mandatory inclusion of health warnings on domestic lighting products containing blue-rich LEDs. This change is vital for safeguarding public health and fostering environments that respect natural human biology.

Please join us in urging policymakers to take this step towards creating healthier public and private spaces. Sign this petition to demand change and protect our communities' health and well-being.
