The new owner of Dublin Coach is being urged to end the company’s past support for cruel hare coursing.
In recent years, Dublin Coach not only sponsored hare coursing (including at Clonmel, Ennis, Edenderry) but has also operated a bus service to the coursing finals, carrying animal cruelty fans to Powerstown Park in Clonmel.
Dublin Coach has recently been acquired by Galway-based Callinan Coaches. We are appealing to the new owner to scrap the coursing sponsorship and Clonmel coursing bus service.
In an email to owner Tommy Callinan, we highlighted the suffering and death of hares in coursing: “Hare coursing involves capturing thousands of hares in nets, holding them in captivity and forcing them to run for their lives ahead of muzzled greyhounds. All hares suffer fear and stress and every coursing season, hare injuries and deaths occur. Among the injuries documented are broken back, spinal injury, broken legs, damaged toes and dislocated hips.”
We also pointed out that most people in Ireland are in favour of a total ban on hare coursing. A RED C opinion poll found that a 77% majority want the government to ban coursing (with just 9% disagreeing with a ban). It is already outlawed in all our neighbouring jurisdictions, including Northern Ireland.
ACTION ALERT
Join us in urging Dublin Coach to side with the compassionate majority and fully disassociate from cruel hare coursing.
