Petition updateBan Blood Sports in IrelandHare dies after Rathcormac-Millstreet coursing meeting
Irish Council Against Blood SportsMullingar, Ireland
May 10, 2024

A hare died after being terrorised at a Department of Heritage-licensed coursing meeting in January, newly released documents reveal.

The shameful animal cruelty event organised by Rathcormac and Millstreet coursing clubs was held on 5, 6 and 8 January 2024 at “Castleisland Hare Coursing Park” at Tullig, Castleisland, Co. Kerry.

The hare who died was among 45 netted from the wild and forced to run for their lives. They were captured between 26 November and 17 December 2023 and held in captivity for up to 44 days. The capture licence was granted by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on behalf of Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien.

Documents published on the NPWS website show that after the coursing meeting, “one hare perished en route to release site” https://www.npws.ie/sites/default/files/files/coursing-rathcormac-2023-2024.pdf

According to a NPWS wildlife ranger who was present to witness the terrorisation of the hares, the hare “was not known to have been pinned”. A coursing club form noted that the hare “died from injuries”. It is unknown what type of injuries were suffered or when/where they occurred.

The coursing documents confirm that hares were hit and pinned to the ground by dogs.

The NPWS ranger reported that:

on Day 1 – 1 hare was pinned and “treated for injuries”.
on Day 2 – 1 hare was hit and 2 hares were pinned. 1 hare was treated for injuries.
on Day 3 – 1 hare was hit. This hare was not examined for injuries.

The ranger report outlines that the injuries suffered by the two hares were “confirmed by attending vet”. Related notes have been inexplicably redacted.

In stark contrast, a form submitted by the coursing club's vet – who shamefully certified the hares “fit for coursing” - shows that zero hares were confirmed injured. And in a “data report”, the coursers stated that zero hares required treatment for injuries.

Shame on Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Green Party for allowing this bloodsport to continue, despite majority support among the public for a ban. A 2019 RED C poll found that 77% want coursing banned, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban.

Due to the cruelty involved, coursing is already illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales).

ACTION ALERT

HELP THE HARES: Tell Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State for Nature Malcolm Noonan to give full protection to the Irish Hare and stop licensing cruel coursing.
