2 hares died at a coursing meeting in County Kilkenny in December, newly released documents reveal.
Documents published on the website of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (which shamefully licenses the bloodsport on behalf of Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien) reveal that the two hares were among 55 captured from the wild and used as live bait for dogs to chase at the Johnstown & Urlingford animal cruelty event https://www.npws.ie/sites/default/files/files/coursing-johnstown-2023-2024.pdf
A NPWS ranger – who was present to monitor the terrorisation of the hares – noted in a report that:
On Day 1 (2 December 2023), one hare was pinned to the ground by dogs and died from injuries
On Day 2, one hare was euthanised. This hare was “confirmed injured” and was killed by the coursing club's vet who had disgracefully certified the hares “fit for coursing”. It is unclear how this hare suffered injuries – there is no record of the animal being hit or pinned.
The hares used and abused at this coursing meeting were netted from the wild between 28 October and 25 November 2023. They were held in captivity for up to 37 days.
The Johnstown & Urlingford coursing meeting takes place within the constituency of Green Party Minister of State for Nature Malcolm Noonan. Minister Noonan – whose Department licences coursing – is on record as stating “we all want to see hare coursing ended – it’s a cruel practice.”
Shame on the Irish Government for allowing this bloodsport to continue, despite majority support among the public for a ban. A 2019 RED C poll found that 77% want coursing banned, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban.
Due to the cruelty involved, coursing is already illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales).
ACTION ALERT
HELP THE HARES: Tell Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State for Nature Malcolm Noonan to give full protection to the Irish Hare and stop licensing cruel coursing.
