Irish hare is being chased towards extinction and nobody appears to care

You would expect a government that includes the Green Party to be focused on preserving what's left of our ravaged wildlife heritage. Sadly, this is not so.
While making slow progress in the battle against climate change and other threats to Ireland's biodiversity, politicians seem incapable of acting to protect an iconic mammal feted in song and legend. The Irish hare, our leaders have decided, must continue to run from dogs at venues nationwide.
As we edge towards the beginning of another coursing season, the future of our native hare - a sub-species of the mountain hare unique to Ireland - is in serious doubt. It has been in decline for the past 50 years.
Take the case of North Bull Island. It teemed with hares up to only a few years ago. Their presence was one of the island's main tourist and environmental attractions. Now there are no hares left on the North Bull. Nothing was done to address this ecological calamity.
