Politicians betray our hares again

Thanks to a licence granted by a government department, thousands of hares will be netted, starting this month, for another coursing season.
Despite pleas from every conservation and animal protection group in the country, and thousands of heartfelt emails and phone calls, the politicians opted yet again to favour the small but powerful pro-hare coursing lobby.
Being netted can in itself prove a harrowing ordeal for a hare, even before the animal is used as a live lure on a coursing field. Nets measuring 1.5 metres tall and tens of metres long are draped from forked rods at selected spots in the countryside where hares are deemed likely to make entrances or exits. Beaters then create a lot of noise, hollering, and belting the ground with sticks, to frighten the hares into movement.
The hares dash right into the nets, quickly becoming entangled in them. Some hares sustain injury at once and have to be disposed of - early casualties of the coursing “game.”
The healthy ones are removed from their habitat and confined for up to seven weeks in paddocks or wire compounds; waiting for the day when dogs will set on them for fun…with the blessing of our national parliament.
What was the point of having a Citizens’ Assembly on Biodiversity Loss report to the Oireachtas on the state of our imperiled wildlife and ecosystems if the government is going to allow this gargantuan abuse of a supposedly “protected” mammal”…one that conservationists hail as the very symbol of our biodiversity?
If the politicians can’t even face down the grubby little hare coursing lobby I doubt very much that they’ll be capable of saving what’s left of our wildlife heritage.
