A county councillor who previously declared that he was against hare coursing has shamefully voted against a motion calling for a ban on the cruel bloodsport.
South Dublin County Councillor Ronan McMahon (Rathfarnham - Templeogue) told ICABS in 2014 that he was “against these cruel activities [hare coursing and fox hunting] and against cruelty to animals in general.”
However, at a meeting of South Dublin County Council on 11 April 2023, Cllr McMahon voted AGAINST a motion which called on the government to ban cruel hare coursing. The motion – “South Dublin County Council supports the Animal Health & Welfare (Ban on Hare Coursing) Bill 2020 and will write to the Minister for Agriculture, calling for a ban on hare coursing” – was passed after 17 compassionate councillors voted in favour (with just six voting against and two abstentions).
The other five councillors who voted against the motion were William Joseph Carey (Sinn Féin), David McManus (Fine Gael), Shirley O’Hara (Fine Gael), Baby Pereppadan (Fine Gael) and Joanna Tuffy (Labour). Ronan McMahon is an Independent Councillor and former representative of Renua, a party founded by Lucinda Creighton who, in a November 2015 Dail debate, suggested that hunting be developed as an Irish tourism product. She lost her Dail seat in the 2016 general election and resigned as Renua leader in May 2016.
In 2014, despite failing to get selected as a Fine Gael candidate for the South Dublin County Council area, Ronan McMahon presented himself in election literature as an "independent Fine Gael" candidate.
