7 hares were hit by greyhounds, 3 were pinned to the ground and 1 “died from injuries” at a coursing meeting in County Kilkenny in December, recently released documents reveal.
The hares were among 47 forcefully captured from the wild and terrorised by greyhounds at the 2-day North Kilkenny animal cruelty event held on 19 and 20 December 2022.
Documents published on the website of the National Parks and Wildlife Service – which shamefully licenses the bloodsport on behalf of Heritage Minister Darragh O'Brien – show that:
On Day 1, a NPWS ranger reported that 3 hares were hit by greyhounds, 1 was pinned to the ground and 1 was “treated for injuries”. In contrast, a report submitted by the coursing club's vet states that 1 hare was examined for injuries but no hares were registered as having been “confirmed injured”.
According to a coursing club report, the hare who suffered the pinning, was “released after vet inspection”.
On Day 2, the ranger noted that 4 hares were hit by the dogs, 2 hares were pinned to the ground, 1 hare was treated for injuries and 1 hare died from injuries sustained.
The coursers declared that 46 of the captured hares were released, while the NPWS ranger put the figure at 45.

At the previous North Kilkenny coursing meeting in December 2021, five hares were hit and pinned by greyhounds at the start of Day 1 before the planned 3-day cruelty event was “called off/suspended with a view to assessing the situation and the possibility of re-organising the meet two weeks later”. It was disgracefully allowed to resume on 3 and 4 January 2022, with one hare hit and pinned on the first day and examined by a vet for injuries. A hare was also hit on Day 2. A NPWS ranger who witnessed some of the releases after the meet, stated that “1 of the 30 died during release”.
Shame on the Irish Government for allowing this bloodsport to continue, despite majority support among the public for a ban. A 2019 RED C poll found that 77% want coursing banned, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban.
Due to the cruelty involved, coursing is already illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales).
