South Dublin County Councillors are being urged to vote in favour of a motion which calls for a ban on cruel hare coursing.

The motion from Green Party Councillor Lyn Hagin Meade is due to be discussed and voted on at the council meeting this Monday 13 March 2023.

The motion states: "South Dublin County Council supports the Animal Health & Welfare (Ban on Hare Coursing) Bill 2020 and will write to the Minister for Agriculture, calling for a ban on hare coursing."

In an appeal to Councillors to support the motion, the Irish Council Against Bloodsports highlighted the cruelty of coursing and the suffering and death it causes to Irish Hares.

“Coursing involves cruelly netting thousands of hares from the wild, holding them in unnatural captivity for weeks or months and eventually forcing them to run for their lives from pairs of muzzled greyhounds - all for the amusement of a merciless mob who cheer the dogs on and gamble on which one will force the hare to change direction first,” we stated. “Every coursing season, hares are injured and killed and all suffer the fear and stress of capture, captivity and pursuit. Hares who survive the ordeal and are released are at risk of later dying from stress-related capture myopathy.”

Councillors voting in favour of the motion would be in line with public opinion on the issue A RED C poll has confirmed that a 77% majority in Ireland want the government to ban hare coursing (with just 9% disagreeing with a ban). A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban.
