We’re over half way through October and already more than a dozen hare coursing events have been staged nationwide. Others will follow in the months ahead, culminating in the All-Ireland Final of this abhorrent blood sport in February. The government has permitted a creature supposedly protected in Irish law to be captured - thousands of them - not in the name of pest control for any scientific purpose, but so that dogs can be set on them.
Heedless of appeals from conservationists and animal protection groups, our political establishment continues to safeguard the interests of those who get their kicks from watching a small defenceless mammal suffering.
Meanwhile the Citizens’ Assembly on Biodiversity Loss is attempting to address the threats to our vulnerable, precious and irreplaceable wildlife species, with politicians of all parties voicing support for its work.
Ironically, the Irish Hare, one of our truly native mammals that’s been on this island for up to seventy thousand years, has long been a symbol of our biodiversity. It is a beautiful creature, one that enhances our natural environment and poses a threat to nobody.
But it faces a threat itself as a species, the hare population having halved since the 1960s due to habitat loss arising from urbanisation and modern agricultural practices. When the vegetation which proves cover and food for the hare is shorn away it might as well be living in a desert.
Yet the government allows coursing to continue. Next weekend, and the one after that, more hares will twist and turn and dodge on grubby fields across Ireland, as fans cheer and gamblers mark their cards.
I admire the men and women of the Citizens Assembly who strive to save what remains of our embattled biodiversity. They give freely of their time for a worthy and increasingly urgent cause.
But how can any politician who supports hare coursing be serious about protecting our wildlife heritage?
