A hare was "thrown up in the air with its leg in the grip of" a greyhound at a coursing meeting in Tubbercurry earlier this year, it has emerged.

The sickening details are contained in a report published on the website of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (which shamefully issues licences for the cruel bloodsport). https://www.npws.ie/sites/default/files/files/coursing-tubbercurry-2021-2022.pdf

The unfortunate hare was one of seven who were hit or pinned by dogs at the three-day coursing meeting on 14/15/16 January 2022. A NPWS ranger who monitored the meet reported that the hare's leg ended up in the mouth of the greyhound after a muzzle "had fallen off" the dog.

A total of 68 hares were captured from the wild in nets for use as live lures at the event.

The ranger recorded that on Day 1, three hares were hit by greyhounds and one was "treated for injuries". On Day 3, two hares were hit and two were pinned, with one treated for injuries.

While the ranger's (redacted) report noted that the two injuries were "confirmed by attending vet" and a coursing club document showed one hare "required treatment from vet for injuries", a report submitted by the coursing club's vet stated that three hares were examined for injuries but zero were confirmed injured.

The NPWS ranger stated that on Day 1, "injured hare checked by vet and then released", adding that "this hare had turned and run into the track wire during course and was subsequently hit." The next day, "the vet informed [the ranger] that the two other hares that were hit the previous day were fine."

The ranger reported that the two hares who were hit by greyhounds on Day 3 "seemed not to have been injured". One of the two hares pinned to the ground by the dogs the same day was caught after "having returned back out of the escapes". The ranger "observed this hare being treated by the vet and then released at the park at the first interval".

"There was a second hare pinned in the second course of the semi final of the Tubbercurry Derby Trial Stake and Traditional cup," the ranger continued. "Despite the stewards racing onto the field, [the ranger] observed this hare being thrown up in the air with its leg in the grip of one of the dogs whose muzzle had fallen off."

The ranger requested to see this hare and commented that "the hare that was produced seemed ok apart from an old healed-over foot injury" and that "it was examined by the vet who gave it the ok".

Members of Ballymena coursing club were present at the Tubbercurry, County Sligo meeting. Coursing is illegal in Northern Ireland so coursers travel south where they are accommodated by clubs in the Republic.

This appalling abuse of the Irish Hare must be finally stopped. Taking thousands of hares from their habitats, manhandling them, holding them in captivity and forcing them to run for their lives is unacceptable. A majority in Ireland want this bloodsport banned. Please join us in once again urging the government to take action and bring coursing to an end.
