Petition updateBan Blood Sports in IrelandCruel hare coursing is “UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE”

Hare coursing “IS UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE”, a courser has acknowledged in a video interview published on the Irish Coursing Club website.

The courser who says he has been involved in coursing for decades was interviewed by a representative of coursing sponsor, Boylesports.

Speaking ahead of the “coursing finals” in Clonmel, he stated: “the game is under a lot of pressure”. https://youtu.be/YZWnHAcRg1I?t=254

He went on to praise Boylesports for its shameful sponsorship which is helping to keep the bloodsport afloat.

“Fair play to Boylesports - they are great sponsors,” he said. “The one thing about the coursing people is that they stick together and when they need help, everyone is prepared to put their hands down and support it. Well done to Boylesports”.

Politicians are coming under increasing pressure to move to bring hare coursing to an end in Ireland. With a RED C opinion poll confirming that a 77 per cent majority want coursing banned (with just 9% disagreeing with a ban), it is now time for our legislators to consign this nasty bloodsport to history. It is already illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions - Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales.

Speaking on Newstalk on Monday, Solidarity-People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy - whose bill to ban coursing is expected back before the Dail in the coming months - said he is “very confident that [last] weekend’s hare coursing [meeting] in Clonmel is going to be one of the last.”

In an interview on the Pat Kenny Show [7 February 2022], he condemned coursing as “a cruel and barbaric activity” and referred to the victims of coursing as “small, defenceless, scared hares who are chased by dogs that are ten times their size”.

“We’ve brought forward legislation to ban hare coursing,” he told listeners. “We will certainly be hoping that this will be debated and voted in the Dail before the summertime.”
