There are renewed calls for a ban on barbaric foxhunting after a fox who was chased for hours by a foxhunt died of exhaustion.

Kitten Cottage Animal Sanctuary in County Cavan posted photos online of the unfortunate fox after he was taken in, saying "please keep your fingers crossed for this beautiful creature."

Sadly, they later reported that "this beautiful creature didn't make it through the night...The exhaustion got the better of the poor pet."

"Hopefully we can follow in the UK's footsteps and ban this outdated barbaric so-called sport," a sanctuary spokesperson added.

"This fox was chased by the hunt for HOURS before being rescued by an animal sanctuary in Co. Cavan," the League Against Cruel Sports Northern Ireland commented in response to the death. "And for what? To satisfy the blood lust of despicable hunters. SHAME ON YOU ALL!"

Comments from others included:

- "Absolutely dreadful. What that poor creature endured
- This needs to stop - you're not human if you can inflict this on a defenceless animal and then call it a sport! No, this is not sport, it's pure savagery
- This is beyond sad...beautiful fox...you are so persecuted
- The work of evil
- Heart breaking. So cruel. Such a sad end"

In foxhunting, a pack of hounds is released to chase foxes to exhaustion, while hunters on foot or horseback follow behind. Foxes caught by the dogs are attacked and torn apart. Foxes who try to escape underground are targeted by hunt terriermen. They send a terrier in to corner and attack the fox, before they dig the clay away from above. The fox is then pulled out and brutally killed.
