Ban Bird Shooting in Aotearoa NZ - Choose Compassion!

The issue

Isn’t it time we ditched the blood sport of bird shooting and traded it for something better; compassion? Every year, hundreds of thousands of ducks and other birds are shot and killed. Thousands are left maimed and injured, left to die with wounds and broken wings because of non-lethal shots. Bird shooting endangers threatened wildlife, and native pārera (grey ducks) are legally shot despite being threatened with extinction.

Tradition and habit are not good reasons to continue cruel practices, and killing for sport belongs in the past. Instead of opening fire on birds, we could encourage local communities to help count wetland dwellers and help preserve habitats. Fostering care and respect for all creatures will help us protect and restore key ecosystems.

Instead of killing and injuring birds, let’s celebrate them by respecting their habitats and leaving wild places free from the clatter of gunfire. Let’s leave the guns at home and ditch the duck hunt. Three Australian states have already banned recreational duck shooting. It's time for Aotearoa NZ to catch up.
