Ban Automated License Plate Readers in Paducah
Ban Automated License Plate Readers in Paducah
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents and concerned citizens, ask the Paducah City Council to stop using Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) and not allow the City to use them in the future. ALPRs collect and store information about vehicles and where they are seen. Although they are often described as a public-safety tool, they also raise serious concerns about privacy, surveillance, data retention, who can access the information, and the creation of records showing where people travel even when they are not suspected of a crime. People in Paducah should not have to accept routine tracking of their movements simply because they drive on public roads. We believe the City can support public safety without creating a system that records the movements of ordinary residents.
We ask the Paducah City Council to
1. End the City’s current contract with Flock Safety and stop using Flock Automated License Plate Readers.
2. Amend the City’s contract with Axon to remove any Automated License Plate Reader products or services.
3. Pass an ordinance prohibiting the City of Paducah and its departments, employees, agencies, and contractors from using Automated License Plate Readers.
We believe Paducah can protect its residents and support law enforcement without creating a system of ongoing, automated vehicle surveillance. We ask the Paducah City Council to protect the privacy of Paducah residents by ending the City’s use of ALPR technology and prohibiting its future use.
We, the undersigned, urge the Paducah City Council to end the Flock contract, remove ALPR services from the Axon contract, and pass an ordinance banning the City’s use of Automated License Plate Readers.
