AI tools are being used by millions of teenagers every day.

But a recent investigation by CNN and the Center for Countering Digital Hate found that many leading AI chatbots provided guidance on acquiring weapons and identifying real-world targets when prompted by users posing as teens planning violence.

Technology that can instantly generate detailed answers should never assist someone in finding weapons or planning harm.

This is not about restricting free speech or access to information broadly available online. It is about preventing AI systems from synthesizing and streamlining violent guidance in ways that make it easier, faster, and more personalized.

We call on Congress to pass federal legislation prohibiting AI platforms from providing assistance related to weapon acquisition, targeting logistics, or violent attack planning — and to require independent safety audits to ensure compliance.
