In the aftermath of such extreme and widespread destruction caused by wildfires more caution then ever before must be exercised in regard to non-target impacts of 1080.
Dingo populations are always important to our biodiversity and can play a crucial role in the environment.
Dingo populations perform what can be an important role in protecting small marsupials from exotic predators such as feral cats and foxes. Small predators can be given a chance of survival without the use of toxin 1080 being used in what is now, in some areas a very fragile ecosystem. Dingoes can control fox and feral cats in the environment. (Apex predator suppression is linked to restructuring of ecosystems via multiple ecological pathways Viyanna Leo, Richard P. Reading, Christopher Gordon, Mike Letnic)
The Victorian Government must be asked not to proceed with any 1080 poison baiting, either aerial baiting or ground baiting and adopt non lethal measures in areas where there have been fires.
Using 1080 poison to bait for foxes will be a folly. Dingoes are susceptible to poison baiting for foxes as well as the Spotted tail quoll a species already listed as threatened under the Commonwealth EPBC Act and potentially baiting in areas razed by fires will prove detrimental to not only Dingoes but species other than foxes.
The Government must adopt a holistic approach to recovery, adopt non lethal measures that will see a healthier recovery of the biodiversity.
