Backdate the Forever GI Bill for 9/11 Veterans

The Issue

After serving in the military, many veterans like myself transition back to civilian life with the hope of building a future. We don't always go straight into school upon discharge; some of us choose to focus on building families, starting new careers, or may not even be aware of the educational benefits available to us. Unfortunately, this means that when we finally decide to pursue further education, we are confronted with restrictive time limits on our Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits.

The GI Bill has empowered countless veterans since its inception, offering the chance to gain higher education and better job opportunities. However, the current policy places a 15-year expiration date on these benefits for Post-9/11 veterans discharged prior to January 1, 2013. This arbitrary cut-off disadvantages individuals who have already sacrificed immensely by limiting their access to educational opportunities. We pledged to serve our country, sometimes delaying personal ambitions for the sake of our military careers. Isn't it time Congress honored that commitment by ensuring we have full access to our earned benefits?

The Forever GI Bill, enacted to eliminate the expiration date, was a step in the right direction but fails to include all deserving veterans. Backdating the Forever GI Bill to include all Post-9/11 veterans would be a monumental and just decision by Congress. It recognizes the diverse paths veterans take after their service and allows us the opportunity to advance our education and careers at our own pace.

Through this petition, we call upon legislators to amend the Forever GI Bill, extending its benefits retroactively. This adaptation will level the playing field for countless veterans who have served our country with honor. By signing this petition, you are supporting veterans’ educational rights and helping rectify a policy that currently leaves many veterans at a disadvantage. Stand with us and urge Congress to take action. Sign and make your voice heard.
