Currently, the Back of the Yards Community has a public library that is occupying the space of a school library in Back of the Yards College Prep. The shared library between the school and the public have different safety policies- making it difficult for both to be fully served. We ask that the community receives a stand alone, public library and releases the space it is occupying at the school.

The high school community deserves to have their own library and to run it as is best suited for their programming. The Back of the Yards community deserves its own standalone, public library that can serve community needs without interfering with existing programs. This hard working, historically underserved community deserves increased investment and more safe spaces. 

In 2020, Thanks to Rep. Mah's advocacy, $15 million in state funding was secured for the initial investment in a new library building. As a community we have the option to request that the use of the funds be for a new stand-alone building. An independent space will amplify the resources that a library can provide beyond books. It will add value to the neighborhood to have multiple investments throughout the community and beautify areas that have been disinvested in.

These are some non-negotiable points that we have identified in community meetings:

• Library should have its own parking
• Ensure security and Privacy
• Maximize resources and space within the library
• Ensures accessibility to people with disabilities and the elderly
• There must be community input on the model
• The library is a stand alone building

We ask that CPL and the Chicago's Department of Planning and Development (including Invest Southwest) align on this community need. We ask that the Back of the Yards community be consulted in a transparent process to bring a stand alone public library. The community knows best what it needs and is ready to be heard.

Actualmente, la comunidad de Back of the Yards tiene una biblioteca publica que esta ocupando una instalacion de la secundaria Back of the Yards College Prep- quitandole su propia biblioteca a la escuela. La biblioteca que es compartida por la escuela y el publico general tienen diferentes polizas/ politicas de seguridad, cual dificulta el servicio completo de ambos. Pedimos que la comunidad tenga una biblioteca publica que no interfiera con otros programas y que se regrese el espacio utilizado a la escuela. 

La comunidad escolar merece su propia biblioteca que sea activada a la manera que mejor sirva a su base estudiantil. La comunidad de Back of the Yards merece su propia biblioteca publica que sea completamente dedicada a servir a los intereses de su comunidad sin interferir con otros programas. Esta comunidad trabajadora que tiene un historial de ser insuficientemente servida merece mas inverciones y mas espacios seguros. 

En 2020, gracias a la abogacía de la representante Mah, se logró obtener $15 millones de fondos estatales para la inversión inicial de un edificio nuevo para la biblioteca. Como comunidad tenemos la opción de pedir que los fondos sean para la construcción independiente de una biblioteca única. Un espacio para la biblioteca independiente provee el espacio para amplificar los recursos que una biblioteca provee, yendo más allá de solo libros. Agrega mas valor a la comunidad tener múltiples inversiones a lo largo del vecindario y embellecer áreas en las que se ha desinvertido.

Estos son unos puntos no negociables que hemos identificado en juntas comunitarias:

• Queremos estacionamiento propio para la biblioteca
• Garantizar seguridad y privacidad dentro de las instalaciones
• Maximizar los recursos y el espacio dentro de la biblioteca 
• Asegurar acesibilidad a las personas con desabilidades y de tercera edad
• Aporte de la comunidad sobre el modelo de la biblioteca
• Que la biblioteca se construya independiente con su propio edificion

Pedimos que CPL y el Departamento de Planeacio y Desarrollo (incluyendo Invest Southwest) se pongan de acuerdo con esta necesidad comunitaria. Pedimos que se consulte a la comunidad de Back of the Yards en un proceso transparente para crear una biblioteca pública independiente. La comunidad sabe mejor lo que necesita y está lista para ser escuchada.
