Hi Joe,
Thanks again for last week’s editorial on the Gateway PDD. I am submitting the attached letter to the editor for publication this week. I have copied Frank as well, as I believe the larger PDD issue is relevant to those west of the canal dealing with both the CPI and the Hills, hope it can run in both. Thanks, BD

OH My. Did you call Altchek? Nick is on the Board of Indian Creek Country Club and Mike Muir is a good friend of David Altchek if you want him to make it easier getting an appt.
Bragman thinks we should have several letters to the editor . I wrote one but it needs editing and cutting back. If you are feeling up to editing let me know .
Feel better!

I have written a letter to the editor but am thinking you and I could submit a separate letter each to the editor for next week . Your thoughts?
Fondly,
Bonnie

I'm pretty sure it will find its way over - especially after last week's editorial - they will be reading closely - (but if they get a few copies it wouldn't hurt) - I'm thinking of another letter to the board - possibly working with Jeff more focused on getting them out of this mess - in a positive way - if they get too defensive and freeze in place the project momentum will still likely grind on - now that they have been assigned responsibility for the mess largely driven by there predecessors - I think we do well to lend help to an organized retreat they can be praised for if they come around.
My 2 cents - BD

Absolutely. I agree. I submitted a letter edited by Jeff. We are trying to see the Town Board members individually especially Bouvier and Lofstad who appear to be against this PDD. Maybe you would like to go with Bragman this week to see them. He is calling them today or tomorrow.
I will send you my letter. They might get it in this week.
Best,
BV

This will be in this Thursday's Letter to the Editor. Our attorney thinks we need several letters at a time to go in. The more pressure we put on the Town Board the Better our chances to get rid of this PDD.

No need for Altchek yet. Going to see if this heals in a sling---that is the route to follow at the moment. But thanks for your offer of help.

Protecting the nature of the place you love
Page 1 of 1Last week The Press got it absolutely right in its eastern edition editorial (A New Role for the Town) regarding the growing folly of the Gateway Planned Development District (PDD) and the need to chart a new course. No matter what side people take, there is no question that after all this time, the Town still can’t clearly explain the basics of how large the project is, what underlying density would allow, how much housing the project would contain, how much bonus commercial density would be allowed, how the project would impact the area’s already unbearable traffic, how reduced parking requirements would be mitigated, or even whether the Town can require advanced sewage treatment for the site’s wastewater (which of course, it can). In fact, the “horse-trading” over basic application details was still going on during the hearing when some speakers were asked from the podium if they could agree to certain project size or use adjustments (based on what data or information, I cannot imagine). It's time for the Town Board to step back, regroup, and end the chaos that has come to define this proposal in particular, and the PDD application process in general. If it is their desire, let the owners of the Gateway parcels present a conforming or rezoning application, and let that application be subjected to the most stringent public and environmental review standing on its own merits and separated from any promotional interests of the Town At the same time, the Town should move quickly to evaluate the existing zoning of the Gateway parcels and any nearby parcels that could be developed or redeveloped (a directive long ago envisioned by the Town’s Comprehensive Plan) alongside a current assessment of community needs and environmental constraints. Once completed, the Town should take comment and then assign the Gateway and any nearby parcels to a defined zoning category, or restrictive zoning overlay district (a solution also outlined in the Comprehensive Plan) with a clear framework of uses and dimensional requirements affording all parties an opportunity to evaluate the project against a defined set of land use criteria. No matter how you look at it, the Town cannot join with a private developer in shaping and promoting a particular application and then expect the public not to be concerned about the objectivity of any project review that follows. Given the sweeping power of the PDD, this kind of entanglement represents an inherent flaw in PDD process that drives public concern and undermines public trust. It is also one of the more troubling shortcomings that could be eliminated as part of a wholesale repeal and replacement of the PDD law, which we strongly support. Sincerely, Robert S.
