The Issue

My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes four and a half years ago, after a life-altering bout with Covid-19. Since then, she, like so many others, has faced the relentless cycle of having to reapply annually for Personal Independence Payment (PIP). It's a process fraught with anxiety and uncertainty, causing unnecessary stress for individuals and families already burdened by this lifelong condition. Type 1 diabetes is not something that just goes away; it is a chronic, incurable condition that requires constant management and vigilance. For those affected, every single day involves monitoring blood sugar levels, calculating the carbohydrates in each meal, and balancing insulin doses. It's a 24/7 responsibility that affects every aspect of life.

Thousands of people across the country are battling the same stress my family and I feel, and it's time for change. Awarding indefinite PIP awards for Type 1 diabetes would not only acknowledge the lifelong nature of this condition but also alleviate the repetitive paperwork, medical assessments, and unwarranted anxiety families endure each year.

It is unjust to put families through this repetitive turmoil when the situation is unlikely to change. The time and resources consumed could be better spent on care and management, improving the quality of life for these individuals.

The statistics are undeniable: over 8% of people who were hospitalized with Covid-19 went on to develop new forms of diabetes, including type 1. The NHS continues to support a high number of diabetes patients, highlighting the permanence and prevalence of this condition. By granting indefinite PIP awards for Type 1 diabetes patients, we provide the ongoing financial support that reflects the ongoing nature of their medical needs.

I urge policymakers to recognize the reality of Type 1 diabetes as a permanent condition and modify the criteria for PIP awards to provide indefinite support. The well-being of thousands hinges on this decision; let’s make a lasting change. Please sign this petition to bring about necessary reform in the PIP assessment process for Type 1 diabetes patients.
