Award Goan singer Lorna Cordeiro the highest Indian honor

The Issue

At 80 years of age, Lorna Cordeiro, often hailed as the Nightingale of Konkani music, continues to enchant audiences across the globe with her melodious voice and timeless songs. Despite her monumental contributions to the world of music and her role in bringing Konkani culture to the international stage, Lorna's extraordinary talent is yet to be acknowledged with the highest award by the Indian Government. This esteemed recognition would serve not only as a tribute to Lorna's personal achievements but also as a celebration of the rich cultural tapestry that Goa adds to the Indian narrative.

Lorna's journey began in the small villages of Goa, where she started singing at a young age. Over the decades, she broke barriers and scaled unimaginable heights, performing Konkani songs infused with influences from other global genres. Her songs transcended language barriers and touched the hearts of people from varied cultural backgrounds. Lorna's music delivers not only soulful tunes but also stories of Goan heritage and identity.

Despite her incredible success at the global level, Lorna Cordeiro's contributions remain vastly underappreciated within her own country. It is more than high time that her efforts in promoting Konkani music and culture are fully recognized and honored by conferring upon her the highest civilian award available. This acknowledgment is not just a personal accolade, but also a testament to the richness of Indian diversity as showcased through its regional music.

Her illustrious career spans over six decades, and in this time, she has enthralled audiences both young and old with her electrifying performances and riveting voice. It is disheartening to see that the 'Nightingale of Goa' has been overlooked by both the Goan and the Indian Government.

We urge the  Honorable Member of Parliament from South Goa Captain Viriato Fernandes  who is also her fan, Ministry of Culture and the President of India to ensure that Lorna Cordeiro's lifelong dedication to music and exceptional contribution to culture receive the due recognition it deserves. The conferral of India's highest award on Lorna would serve as an inspiration for countless artists who strive to preserve and propagate regional music.

Please sign this petition to honor Lorna Cordeiro with the highest Indian award and give her the recognition she richly deserves. Join us in writing history, showing that we stand with artists who carry the true spirit and soul of India in their voices and hearts.
