As a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 70, I work tirelessly in construction, repair, and maintenance of our nation's power grid. Despite the pivotal role we play, the cost of our personal electricity bills remains unreflective of our contribution. We are petitioning for a 25% discount on electricity bills for those who construct, repair and maintain the nation's power grid. 

The energy sector remains a cornerstone of the American economy, employing over 1 million workers, with approximately 200,000 in the electric power generation and supply industry, including renewable energy (source: U.S. Energy and Employment Report, 2018). Yet, the majority of these professionals bear the full weight of rising electrification costs, despite their direct involvement in the energy provision chain.

Not only would such a discount serve as a show of appreciation for work that often goes unrecognized and can be hazardous, but it can also contribute to a stronger, healthier workforce, fascinated by their effort's impactful contribution.

We call upon legislators, the Department of Energy and utility companies to recognize, reward and award a 25% discount on electricity bills for the devoted, skilled staff including us, the unseen heroes who sustain our nation's power grid.
