Authorise parent and child parking badges!

Authorise parent and child parking badges!

The Issue

Having recently welcomed a new baby into our family, I've faced numerous challenges that many new parents encounter, especially when it comes to parking. More than once, we've arrived at a location only to find that the parent and child parking bays are occupied by individuals without small children. This not only makes an already exhausting experience even more strenuous but also raises safety concerns for both parents and children.

Many parking areas in the UK designate parent and child bays, but they are often used by individuals who don't meet the criteria. Currently, there is no enforceable way to prevent misuse of these spaces. However, I propose a simple yet effective solution: Let’s create a parent and child parking badge system similar to that for disabled parking. These badges can be issued by a midwife, similar to the way maternity exemption certificate is but after delivery, and would expire five years from the date of birth.

This system would ensure that only those eligible – parents with young children – could park in these designated bays. It would provide much-needed access and convenience to those who truly need it, and local councils could implement fines for those who use the bays without the proper badges.

Having such a system in place would not only make daily outings less stressful for parents but also improve safety standards for transporting young children. Moreover, it respects the needs of all shoppers and ensures that new parents aren't unduly burdened.

Please sign this petition to urge the government and local councils to introduce parent and child parking badges that would protect these essential spaces for their rightful users.
