What can Proton Therapy treat? Introducing a new education series.

Over the coming weeks, Proton Cancer Access Australia will be sharing a new education series: What Can Proton Therapy Treat?

Many people think proton therapy is only used for children and adolescents with cancer.

While proton therapy can be incredibly important in paediatric cancer care, it may also be relevant for many adult cancers.

This series will explore how proton therapy may be relevant across many different cancer types: not because every patient will need it, but because some tumours are difficult to treat safely when they sit close to vital organs and healthy tissue.

We will look at some of Australia’s deadliest cancers, including lung, bowel, pancreatic, prostate and breast cancer.

We will also look at less common but complex cancers, including oesophageal, spinal, stomach, and head and neck cancers, where the location of the tumour can make precision radiation especially important.

This series is about awareness, education and access.

It is not about saying proton therapy is right for every patient or every diagnosis. It is about helping Australians understand that proton therapy exists, what it may be capable of, and why it should be part of the conversation when treatment decisions are being made.

Because access starts with awareness.

For anyone new to proton therapy, the link below is for a short video which gives a simple overview of how Proton Therapy works and why reducing radiation exposure to healthy tissue can matter.

Please note: Proton Cancer Access Australia has no affiliation with IBA, the makers of this video. We are sharing it for general education and awareness only.

We are also continuing to ask Australians to sign and share the petition calling on both the Federal and State Governments to make a decision and get Australia’s proton therapy project moving again.

For too many families, this is not an abstract policy issue. It is a potential lifeline.
