Associations between non-neurological factors and Multiple Sclerosis progression are frequently referenced in the literature. In recent times the scope, depth and interconnectivity of what is being learnt has escalated. Technological advances combined with participations by the global MS community further enhance this knowledge base. There are entirely new understandings about the vascular system including its interfunctioning with the brain. Text books are being re-written.
It is now clear that Multiple Sclerosis is not exclusively a Neurological Disorder and that addressing underlying vascular irregularities can provide significant relief from the consequences of the range of vascular obstructions experienced by many with MS. Collectively these obstructions are known as Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency (CCSVI). The challenge is to translate these benefits to the broader MS community by ensuring ready access to appropriate CCSVI screening with follow up by Vascular specialists regarding treatment options.
The Multiple Sclerosis Network of Care’s latest ‘’Top 20’’ News Update includes highlights about much of the foregoing research with links to the underlying evidence base.
