Australian Govt: commit to trial a 4 Day Week

Australian Govt: commit to trial a 4 Day Week
The issue
If you’re feeling exhausted at work, you’re not alone. In March 2023, research from the University of Melbourne showed that many working Australians are burnt out and exhausted – our mental and physical health has been significantly impacted by the pandemic. [1]
But it does not have to be this way. Overseas, and at home, businesses and governments are moving to a four-day week: a reduction in work time, with no loss in pay.
Trials overseas have shown the huge benefits of the 4 Day Week for individual workers, that include: reduced stress and burnout, more time for exercise, eating well and sleep, more time for family and community. And businesses benefit too: employees are happier, just as productive, take fewer sick days and feel more committed to their workplace.
4 Day Week Australia has been advocating to the Australian Government about the need for a trial, and in March 2023 a national inquiry from the Australian Senate supported this recommendation, stating: “The committee recommends the Australian Government undertake a four-day week trial…the trial should be implemented in diverse sectors and geographical locations.” [2]
We need your help to make sure that the Australian Government takes up this recommendation, and commits to trial a 4 Day Week in Australia. By signing this petition, we can show that Australians support a trial, and want our Government to address the burnout too many of us are facing.
On April 21 in 1856, Stonemasons famously downed tools in Melbourne – walking off the job to protest, and win, the right to the 8 hour day. This moment has cemented Australia’s place in history – as strong advocates for meaningful changes to work that support wellbeing.
Now, 167 years on, we are calling on the Australian Government to commit to trial this new way of working. Taking this step moves us closer to achieving work-life balance for everyone working in Australia.
