Why this petition matters

Started by Ruth Groundwater

I have written a letter to the government, and know, that the more signatures from people who agree with the letter and what it stands for will have a greater impact on the outcome. I want sexual abuse STOPPED!

"I am writing to you today to ask that you, my government, take the leadership our society needs to eradicate Child Abuse.

Official statistics show that I in 4 girls and 1 in 7 boys will be sexually abused before they reach 18. The figure is likely to be higher as many abuse cases go unreported. WHY? Shame! The Shame a victim feels that such a violation has happened to them. Shame!  Family members feel the shame of not having protected their child. Shame! Humans who sexually abuse any child should own the shame of their horrendous act, not the victims. Their need to control is the Shame. Being a victim of child abuse in two separate incidents I suppressed the memories of those painful events until I was much older. My family did nothing because of the shame they felt it would bring to them.

Please develop a campaign to address Shame. To make anyone who has abused or is tempted to abuse to stop, to have shame and seek help. To take themselves away from forcing a child to live a life sentence of feeling worthless. Stop, report, seek help

A campaign to address Shame, so that families realise this is happening everywhere, that abuse knows no social, racial or religious boundaries. That the shame is not theirs but the perpetrators. Stop. Report. Restore

A campaign to address Shame, so the victim knows the Shame is not theirs. The victim needs to know that they will be safe, they will be cared for. That if the abuser is a family member, a bread winner, that the victims and remaining family members will survive financially. Stop. Report. Heal.

I truly believed if the campaigns are produced correctly and sustained for a long period of time, the stigma of reporting abuse will fall away, and abuse cases will increase. This is what we want. But this will place greater demands on the justice and social systems of this country. We have to prepare for that, and be prepared to financially support that. Thousands of lives will be saved. Thousands of lives will be changed. Our society will be a much healthier, more productive and sustainable place to be living in. Just think you could be the reason for this monumental catalyst.

Picture the average classroom of children with around 30 pupils in it. Going by the rough census we have, in every classroom around the country 6 children will be sexually abused in their life time! Please STOP this CRIME.

Campaign the SHAME. Report it. Stop it."
