Australian born child is still in bridging visa E whereas the mother Australian citizen

The issue

My name is Janatha Purushuthaman, and I am reaching out with a heavy heart and a desperate plea for assistance. I became an Australian citizen on October 4, 2023, but my precious 7-year-old son, Dishon Andres Fernando Warnakulasooriya, who was born in Australia, currently holds a Bridging Visa E subclass (050). Despite his Australian birthright, his future is uncertain due to complications arising from his father's past actions. I have been informed that he is not eligible to add him under me yet was because his father arrived illegally via boat from Sri Lanka, even though his father and I have been legally divorced for over 6 years and he has no contact with either Dishon or me.

Dishon has Autism Spectrum Disorder and an Intellectual Disability, which makes him non-verbal and highly dependent on others for even the most basic needs. Witnessing his struggle without adequate therapy and medical care is profoundly painful. Without access to NDIS support or Medicare, I am unable to afford the essential therapies he desperately needs. As a single mother working casually at a pharmacy, my limited income is insufficient to cover these costs, and Dishon's father provides no financial support.

Our situation is further exacerbated by Dishon's visa status. Since my permanent residency was granted before Dishon could be included in my application, his Bridging Visa E subclass (050) has left us in a state of limbo. The uncertainty and delay in resolving his visa status are causing immense distress. It is heartbreaking to think that Dishon, who knows no other home but Australia, is caught in this bureaucratic impasse. The uncertainty is overwhelming and deeply distressing. I am heartbroken thinking about the future of my child who has spent his entire life here in Australia, a land he knows as home.

As a mother, it is devastating to see my child struggle daily to communicate and manage his challenges. Dishon has missed out on critical early interventions due to our current visa issues, and I fear that his potential for a better life is being compromised by these circumstances.I am earnestly requesting your help to expedite our situation and provide the support Dishon needs to thrive. Any assistance or intervention that can be offered would provide us with much-needed hope and relief during this challenging time. I once had a dream to continue my further education but due to this situation I have to put all my dreams aside and had to work hard to provide myself and my son. I knew someday Dishon will become an Australian citizen but my concern is why it’s not now and have to be waiting and for how long?

Therefore, all I’m asking is please do spare your 5 minutes in reading this and do care to sign my petition and share it to as many as you all can. Please feel free to contact me at your earliest convenience to discuss this matter further. I can be reached via email janathapurushuthaman@gmail.com . Your compassion and prompt attention to our situation would mean the world to us.

Thank you very much for considering my heartfelt request.

With deepest gratitude and hope,
