Australia Must Lead the World in Establishing Global Whale Safe Corridors

Australia Must Lead the World in Establishing Global Whale Safe Corridors
The issue
Every year, whales travel thousands of kilometres through international waters — from the icy Antarctic to the warm tropical breeding grounds. These migrations connect oceans and nations, but whales are under increasing threat from noise pollution, ship strikes, fishing gear, and industrial expansion.
Whales do not recognise borders — their protection must also cross borders.
We are calling on the Australian Government to lead a Global Whale Safe Corridors Alliance:
- to protect vital migration routes across the world’s oceans,
- to work with neighbouring nations and international organisations to align marine protection policies, and
- to advocate for ocean noise reduction and safer shipping practices.
Australia has long been a voice for ocean conservation. Now, we have the opportunity to be a leader — by championing the creation of internationally recognised Whale Safe Corridors under global conservation frameworks.
Let’s show that Australia cares not only for the whales in our waters, but for all whales on this planet.
Let’s make our oceans safe, connected, and alive.
Sign this petition to urge the Australian Minister for the Environment and Water to:
- Announce public support for Whale Safe Corridors.
- Propose the formation of an international alliance for coordinated whale protection.
- Bring this initiative to international attention through the UN Ocean Decade and other global environmental forums.
Together, we can ensure that whales — the great engineers of our oceans — continue to thrive for generations to come.
Sign now and share. Let’s make Australia the voice that calls for global ocean unity.
