4 Kas 2015
Please show up at the city council chambers at city hall on Nov 12th! This will likely be the last time the full city council will hear any public testimony from citizens about the new strict short term rental regulations they are proposing. Now is the time to show up and have your voice heard. Everyone that shows up should have the opportunity to speak.

The full Austin city council will be discussing and possibly passing more restrictions and bans on short term rentals. This meeting is specifically about hearing testimony on suspending all new Type 2 STR licenses for 1 year, but all public testimony related to STRs will be heard for the last time. Please show up to show your support, wear blue. Airbnb and HomeAway will be passing out stickers to show your support. This is very important to attend!
Below are some more items being considered, but they can bring up any other items without notice or public input.
- Suspending all new Type 2 licenses for 1 year
- Requiring a conditional use permit for Type 2 STRs and possibly other STRs (conditional use permits can take up to 5 years to get and cost thousands of dollars)
- Phase out/ban all existing Type 2 STRs
The city council will be voting on language at this meeting to suspend new Type 2 STR licenses, but the language appears to also ban all existing Type 2 licenses by removing Type 2 STRs as an allowable use in residential areas. (Draft Language http://www.austintexas.gov/edims/document.cfm?id=241262). The city council asked city legal to come back with language that only suspends new Type 2 licenses for 1 year, yet it appears they are trying to sneak in language to "phase out" existing Type 2 STR licenses, which was not what originally passed the city council for the legal department to draft and come back with.
