Aus Post: Stop charging us more to use eco friendly packaging than your plastic satchels

To Australia Post :
Currently industrial and commercial shipping/packaging waste is a huge contributor to landfill every year. Knowing the current landfill crisis and the overwhelming need to reduce waste nationwide, we ask you to please step up and become an example towards sustainability and innovation.
Currently it is cheaper (in the majority of situations) to send parcels in a brand new single use flat rate plastic satchel than in compostable/biodegradable/recycled or reusable/sustainable packaging. Australia Post's plastic flat rate satchels are an attractive option for small-large businesses in Australia as they reduce the cost of shipping significantly - however the cost to the environment can no longer be ignored. Amazing businesses like @betterpackagingco now offer innovative alternatives to plastic packaging - like compostable postage satchels that can be composted at home. Even for a satchel the exact same weight and size, Australia Post will charge more for the plastic satchel over the BYO sustainable packaging.
*To clarify, packages under 500g generally have a similar flat rate fee anyway regardless of packaging - it is over 500g that this issue occurs. Packages over 500g can cost 2-3x as much as using the plastic prepaid parcels, even if the weight and dimensions are identical. If the only difference is the material the package is wrapped in - surely Aus Post can include our eco packaging in this flat rate structure.
When it comes to boxes: I were to ship an order off in a recycled/reused box (completely recycled box, with paper tape, 100% compostable) - it would be CHEAPER for me to put that exact same box into a plastic satchel and send it that way. It is simply incentivising using extra packaging and less recycled or sustainable shipping. Australia Post has committed to demonstrating change on sustainable values - let's see that become a reality.
This is an easy change.
What we want:
We want Australia Post to incorporate BYO satchel pricing into their flat rate pricing system. We want to be able to ship parcels in flat rate satchels, without having to use Australia Post's single use plastic satchels which contribute to further landfill. If Australia Post simply changed it's policy from not allowing 'own packaging' satchels to fall under the flat rate pricing structure - to allowing it, small businesses wouldn't have to make a choice between sustainability and excessive postal costs. Even if it were an approved manufacturer / bag that had the same size as your satchels, so there was an environmentally thoughtful option for customers (this option would help reduce time spent measuring if this is a concern). This is a simple change that would have hugely beneficial environmental implications. Satchels would be the same exact weight and dimensions as your current flat rate satchels and amazing company @betterpackagingco has already said that they are prepared to work with Australia Post to create satchels the exact dimensions of Australia Post's current satchels. So ultimately - nothing would change but your policy (and a hugely beneficial change for the environment)
We would like (Sally, petition creator) to be able to have a conversation with Christine Holgate or another key decision maker within Australia Post, to open a dialogue on how changes can realistically/reasonably be implemented to positively align with Australia Post's values, as well as the increasing demand for environmentally thoughtful postage options.
Why is this important?
Australia Post has already partnered up with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and made a commitment to improve their practices in regard to: industry, infrastructure and innovation, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action and more.
Currently this small bit of policy in regards to BYO (eco friendly) satchels and Australia Post's flat rate shipping fee structure - makes a huge difference to small business owners wanting to be more sustainable. A relatively small change for Australia Post would have huge impact on small business owners across Australia, and on the environment.
Australia post needs to lead by example. It is important to acknowledge that Australia Post has previously made steps towards greater sustainability - including introducing recycling schemes for their plastic mailers via third parties like terracycle. However, recycling plastics means melting them down further, releasing more toxic fumes into the environment and casting them into a cruder plastic. Ultimately, plastic can only ever really be 'downcycled' - becoming cruder and inferior in quality each time it is reused until eventually still winding up in landfill. Recycling plastic only stalls it's inevitable entry into landfill - we need to make change to reduce, rather than relying on a recycling system which is already overwhelmed.
There is already huge support and demand for sustainable packaging options and small businesses all over Australia are embracing these more environmental ways to ship. Small businesses all over Australia are embracing these more environmental ways to ship - but often paying significantly more as a result. Making this small change would see it become more affordable for businesses to choose to ship sustainability/post without contributing to more unnecessary environmental waste.
What would this change mean for Australian Small Businesses?
It means that small businesses would be able to ship using sustainable packaging options like recycled mailers (turning mailers inside out to reuse) or compostable/biodegradable satchels. It means small business owners wouldn't have to make a choice any longer between excessive shipping costs and sustainability.
What would this change mean for Australia Post?
It would mean a small policy change in relation to their flat rate fee structure and BYO packaging. It would mean following through in an amazing way on their commitment to upholding environmental/sustainable values. It would mean becoming a leader in innovation and truly making a huge leap forwards towards reducing packaging landfill.
Australia Post, please consider truly embodying the goals you have suggested - becoming a company who truly represents sustainability, climate action and eco-friendliness on a phenomenal scale. You've already shown your values as a company by committing to this change with the UN sustainability goals, now please lead by example and embody those changes. This is a minor change in the scheme of things to a piece of policy regarding flat rate satchels and byo packaging. This change could be made quickly, easily and with a hugely beneficial outcome for our planet. Now is the time.
Please support this petition by simply signing your name. You have the ability to help drive real change on a grassroots level. Sharing the petition will help spread the cause more. Not only would Aus Post making this change help reduce an insane amount of plastic ending up in landfill every single year - but it would be a hugely positive example on a large corporate scale. This is the sort of change Australia needs right now. Let's drive this change. Together, with Australia Post, we can make a huge step forwards for the planet.
