Improve safety conditions in Albert Park!

The issue

One of the first things that Auckland University Students are told is to avoid Albert Park at night, especially when alone or after drinking. Outside of the University, Albert Park is also well known as a dangerous place after dark. These safety risks have come to a head with the brutal assault of several Auckland students and young women in Albert Park recently, as reported by the New Zealand Herald: http://m.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11613419

Mayor Len Brown has requested a briefing on the assault, but assaults, abuse (including along racial lines) and other harassment is becoming increasingly commonplace in Albert Park.

We should not hold ourselves to a standard where it is acceptable to feel unsafe in our public parks. Auckland students, residents and visitors should be able to enjoy the the city facilities without feeling unsafe.

Auckland University Student's Association (AUSA) demands that Auckland Council takes action to address the unacceptable safety risks in Albert Park. We call for more lighting, access to security phones and an increased physical security presence in the park at minimum. Help us make our city a safer place for all, and sign our petition.

Dear Students and other Aucklanders deeply concerned about violent crime principally targeting Asians, principally Chinese. Be in no doubt I am on your side. I have formally complained to the Mayor of Aucklsnd and spoken frankly to the Vice Chancellor of Auckland University who is in London and who it appears is yet to fully understand the scale of the problem and the threat to his students. I will be attending the Chinese Students Association meeting on Friday evening to hear from the students themselves.
