Tout d'abord, je tiens à remercier les Français pour leur accueil si chaleureux lors de mon passage en France pour la promotion de mon livre "La vie après la mort" publié aux éditions Ring. Ce voyage restera une expérience dont je me souviendrai toute ma vie.

Je m'appelle Damien Echols et j'ai été condamné à mort aux Etats-Unis pour un crime que je n'ai pas commis. J'ai passé 18 ans dans le couloir de la mort, avant d'être enfin libéré en 2011. Mon combat n'est cependant pas terminé. L'Etat de l'Arkansas, où j'étais détenu, refuse de reconnaître qu'il a condamné à mort un innocent. Le plus terrifiant est qu'il laisse le coupable avéré en liberté

Des tests ADN approfondis ont été effectués, à partir de preuves relevées sur la scène de crime. Ils prouvent mon innocence et accusent un membre de la famille de l'une des victimes. Des témoins oculaires ont confirmé avoir vu cette personne en compagnie des trois victimes, une heure avant leur disparition. Le lendemain, ils étaient retrouvés morts. Les rapports de sept médecins légistes reconnus dans le monde entier ont démonté les preuves retenues contre moi et établi mon innocence.

Afin de ne pas assumer sa responsabilité, l'Etat de l'Arkansas nous a proposé ce que l'on appelle un plaider Alford: ce plaidoyer permet à l'Etat de maintenir les charges contre moi, mais je peux proclamer légalement mon innocence. II protège les politiciens qui m'ont condamné, le juge, le ministre de la Justice et les avocats généraux, réduit à néant la possibilité pour Jason, Jessie et moi d'être indemnisés et ma vie porte le poids d'une condamnation pour triple meurtre. Nous restons, pour le monde entier, les trois de west Memphis. Etant toujours coupable aux yeux de la loi, la moindre petite infraction peut me renvoyer en prison. L'Etat refuse de rouvrir le dossier afin de ne pas compromettre les politiciens.

J'aimerais lancer une pétition internationale depuis la France, pays des droits de l'homme. J'appelle le président François Hollande et le gouvernement de la République française à contacter par voie diplomatique le président Barack Obama et le gouvernement américain afin de le convaincre d'ouvrir une nouvelle enquête sur cet abominable crime pour poursuivre le vrai meurtrier. Jessie, Jason et moi pourrions ainsi être disculpés.

First, I just want to say thank you to the people of France for the warm and wonderful welcome you have given me while I have been here promoting my book "Life after death" published by Ring éditions. This trip will be an experience I will remember forever.

My name is Damien Echols, and I was sentenced to death in the United States for a crime I didn't commit. I was on death row for 18 years before finally being released in 2011, although my battle is not over. The state of Arkansas, where I was convicted, still refuses to admit they sentenced an innocent man to death. Even more frightening, they continue to allow the actual murderer to walk free.

Extensive DNA testing of evidence from the crime scene proved that I did not commit the crime, but the tests results produced a match to a family member of one of the victims. Eye witnesses have come forward, who placed this same person with the three victims an hour before they disappeared, only to be found murdered the next day. Reports from seven of the world's renowned forensic pathologists have demolished the state's evidence against me, further proving my innocence.

To escape responsibility for their actions, the State of Arkansas offered what is known as an Alford Plea. The plea enabled the State to maintain its claim of guilt against me, but I can legally proclaim my innocence. The Alford Plea was used to protect the politicians who convicted me; the judges, attorney general, and prosecutors, and eliminated the chance of having to pay compensation to me and my co-defendants, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley. We are known internationally as The west Memphis Three.

Because I am still guilty in the eyes of the law, any infraction could send me back to prison, and my life carries the weight of three capitol murder convictions. The State refuses to investigate the case, because to do so would undo their protection.

I would like to put forth a world-wide petition from France, the country of human rights. I am making a plea to President Hollande and the French Government to diplomatically contact President Obama and the Government of the United States to call for a new investigation of this heinous crime, in order to prosecute the actual murderer. Thus, Jason, Jessie and I would be exonerated.
