ATTN Campbelltown Council,NSW: Get involved in TNR work of growing colony cat populations
The issue
Petition to Campbelltown Council: Support for Collaborative Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Programs
We, Mulligan Meows Cat and Kitten Rescue, together with the undersigned, urge Campbelltown Council to actively support and facilitate a collaborative Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program to address the growing population of stray and community cats humanely and effectively.
TNR is a proven method to control and reduce cat populations while improving animal welfare. It involves trapping cats, neutering them to prevent further reproduction, and returning them to their habitat or rehoming where possible. This approach is far more compassionate and cost-effective than traditional methods.
Crucially, this TNR program will include ongoing colony care, such as feeding and healthcare for managed cat colonies. These measures are vital to minimizing the impact on native wildlife, domesticated cats, and local residents, ensuring a balanced and sustainable solution for all.
We request that Campbelltown Council take the following actions to make this initiative a success:
- Facilitate and Drive the Collaborative Project.
Take a leadership role in bringing together key stakeholders, including rescue groups, local veterinarians, the Animal Welfare League, and community volunteers. By facilitating regular meetings, providing strategic guidance, and promoting collaboration, the Council can help establish a well-coordinated, community-driven TNR program. - Assist in the Identification and Provision of Resources
Support the TNR initiative by identifying available resources and, where possible, providing direct assistance. This could include grants or subsidies for equipment like humane traps, access to veterinary services for desexing and healthcare, and logistical support for colony management. Council’s involvement in securing funding and resources from government or private sources will be instrumental in sustaining the program. - Implement Free and Low-Cost Desexing Programs for All Campbelltown LGA Residents
Broaden the reach of the TNR program by offering accessible desexing options to all residents in the Campbelltown LGA. Affordable or free desexing programs will empower pet owners to prevent unintended litters and reduce the number of stray and community cats over time. Partnering with veterinary clinics to deliver these services will ensure they are practical and effective.
By undertaking these steps, Campbelltown Council can create a compassionate and sustainable solution to manage cat populations, protect native wildlife, and foster community harmony.
Please join Mulligan Meows Cat and Kitten Rescue and the wider community in calling on Campbelltown Council to take action now. Together, we can make a meaningful difference for our community and its animals.
