San Rafael Mayor Gary Philips and Council Member and Sustainability Liaison, Kate Colin, signed a letter today to Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, endorsing the local initiative that asks Amazon to undertake a pilot packaging pick up program in Marin County.
They stated:
Our Climate Change Action Plan calls for closed-loop systems to reduce packaging waste as the best alternative to recycling, which costs money, uses resources like water and energy, produces greenhouse gases and other pollutants, and is subject to dramatic price variations.
Cory Bytof, Sustainability and Volunteer Program Coordinator for San Rafael, adds, “I love any and all take-back programs!”
The City of San Rafael is the fifth community in Marin County to endorse the Amazon to Reuse Boxes Initiative, joining Larkspur, Belvedere, Muir Beach, and Fairfax.
Hundreds of San Rafael residents have signed the Amazon to Reuse Boxes petition, and a total of 5,600 residents throughout Marin.
Conservation International advises that 10,000 signatures are needed from Marin residents to demonstrate to Amazon that there is widespread interest in an Amazon pick up program.
