Attendance policy

The Issue

The recently introduced attendance policy at GCHS requires students to provide a doctor’s note for any absence, with serious consequences: slipping grades, revoked field trip opportunities, or even the ability to attend prom. This approach is unfair, as it places an added burden on students who may already face challenges like financial hardship, chronic illness, or disabilities. Not every absence, common cold, stomach bug, or medical flare-up, justifies or allows for a doctor’s visit, and expecting documentation in every case creates unnecessary barriers. Instead of supporting students, the policy risks penalizing those who may be least able to meet its demands. It is our responsibility as students and peers to ensure that this policy is changed to reflect the values of our community, while we acknowledge that attendance is a critical issue, these punishments are unjust and unacceptable.

The District continues to support efforts that limit chronic absenteeism and support regular student attendance. Students and parents with concerns regarding academic, behavioral or organizational matters are expected to follow the chain of command with their student's building principal to address these concerns directly and thoughtfully.
