East Delhi Needs A Government Super-Speciality Hospital

The Issue

I am a resident of Geeta Colony in East Delhi and I am deeply concerned by the unavailability of a government super speciality hospital in the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.

Last year I contracted typhoid, which led to some serious complications for which I required specialised care. Unfortunately, the closest Government facility was more than 15 kilometers away at the Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital. More recently, my friend's mother suffered a major heart attack and again the family had to travel a couple of hours in Delhi's traffic to take her to the hospital.

I am extremely distressed because the lack of a super speciality hospital in our area is not for want of resources or land, but for lack of will. Delhi's Master Plan has a vacant plot of land near the Chacha Nehru Hospital, earmarked for building a healthcare facility. The Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi has repeatedly requested the land be allocated for a super speciality hospital for Geeta Colony and the entire neighbourhood. However, the Delhi Development Authority, controlled by the Central government through Delhi's Lt-Governor Anil Baijal has so far refused to do so

The East Delhi MP is a de facto member of the DDA and we had hoped he would influence the government positively. Since that hasn't happened, I look to Atishi, the Aam Aadmi Party candidate for East Delhi Lok Sabha to push the DDA; both, as a candidate who wants to represent us and if she wins, as our MP. As a member of the DDA, Atishi will be in a position to influence the process of allocation of land for a hospital.

My family and countless other families of East Delhi go through some anxious moments whenever a loved one is in need of specialised healthcare. Our lives would be a lot easier if there were a super speciality hospital in Geeta Colony.

I urge the Lt-Governor of Delhi, Anil Baijal, who is the Chairperson of DDA to hear a concerned citizen's voice and hope that Atishi shall take this issue up as a campaign promise to her voters.

Responded
Dear Supporters, Thank you for sending me this petition on Change.org as a suggestion for my #EastDelhiDialogues. Like you, I too feel the need urgent and pressing need for a hospital in East Delhi. Over the past 4 years, the AAP government in Delhi has tried to build at least 3 hospitals in East Delhi — on Pushta Road, in Okhla’s Batla House area and in Sarita Vihar. But since Delhi is not a full state and the files for these government hospitals were deliberately stopped. With full statehood, East Delhi will get these three new government hospitals to cater to the needs of the people, and that is why the Aam Aadmi Party is fighting tooth and nail to make Delhi’s statehood a reality. The Mohalla Clinics and PolyClinics of the AAP government have been providing free healthcare services to the people of East Delhi. Despite their benefit to the people of Delhi, these clinics are attacked by the Centre and MCD. In a full state, East Delhi will get a strong network of Mohalla and PolyClinics which are successful in providing free, doorstep healthcare services to all citizens, and can function without any interference. Understaffed and overburdened, best defines the present condition of the healthcare network in East Delhi. In a full state, the Delhi government will have the power to recruit and we will use it to employ more doctors and medical staff, so that high-quality health facilities are not compromised. Drug addiction is a major concern in different pockets of East Delhi, including but not limited to Sarai Kale Khan, Nizamuddin, Kalyanpuri, Trilokpuri etc. Drug de-addiction centres will be set up to help communities resolve this problem. With the aim of improving women’s healthcare conditions, mother and child healthcare centres will be set up for specialised care. Full statehood status will allow Delhi to have access to a unified healthcare system with the AAP government ensuring synchronisation between various governmental agencies, and it is our mission to achieve that. Warm Regards Atishi
