Assert Sovereign Control of Canada's Air Defences

The Issue

To the Right Honourable Prime Minister and the Minister of National Defence:

We, the Owners of Canada, call on the Government of Canada to end further commitments to the U.S. F-35 fighter jet program and instead invest in sovereign, Canadian-based solutions.

Why this matters

  • The U.S. Ambassador’s ultimatum — made on behalf of President Trump — puts Canada’s sovereignty and agency in question.
  • No ally should dictate our defence choices under threat.
  • Every dollar spent on the F-35 enriches the Trump economy while weakening Canada’s ability to control our own defence.
  • Canadian resources must never be used to fund coercion or foreign control over our security.

A better path

  • Pivot to the Saab Gripen, with full assembly in Canada, so our country maintains complete control over its air defence fleet.
  • Develop and manufacture engines and other components domestically to secure supply chains.
  • Keep investment and jobs in Canada, building a strong aerospace sector for the future.
  • Direct a portion of funds toward advanced drone systems — a smarter, more cost-effective approach to modern warfare, and an opportunity for Canadian innovation, especially in the Arctic.

Our demand

Canada must halt the F-35 program at the minimum legal commitment and move decisively toward sovereign air defence production at home.

We understand this course of action to be in accordance with the stated aims of this administration.

Signed,
The Owners of Canada
