Darby McDevitt is currently the only writer we know who is still at Ubisoft with a deep, long-standing connection to Assassin’s Creed. With more than 14 years of experience on the franchise, he is one of the few who consistently tried to elevate its narrative direction.
For the past decade, the series has struggled with a loss of strong characters, cohesive storytelling, and the core identity that once defined Assassin’s Creed — the ideological conflict between Assassins and Templars, the importance of the Modern Day, and a unified lore guided by clear rules. Without a dedicated Lore Master, the franchise has often drifted into disconnected historical settings without a strong narrative foundation.
Darby’s work, however, shows a clear long-term vision. Starting from Bloodlines, becoming Lead Writer on Revelations, and later introducing the concept of the Sages in Black Flag at a time when the series was beginning to lose direction, he consistently aimed to rebuild and expand the Assassin’s Creed universe.
His return in Valhalla further demonstrated this: he refined the Modern Day by removing Layla Hassan, a character who had little meaningful development and gave her arc a new purpose. He expanded the lore significantly, reintroducing Desmond as the Reader, finally establishing the connection that many fans expected since Assassin’s Creed II. He deepened the Isu mythology, recontextualized figures like Adam and Eve, and introduced complex ideas about the future of Earth.
Most importantly, Valhalla gave us Basim, the first truly “grey” Assassin in the games, a character driven by motives no one fully understands. Darby masterfully utilized the Sage concept he originally helped shape back during Black Flag, turning Loki’s reincarnation into a central narrative pillar.
All these contributions prove one thing:
Darby McDevitt has a clear, cohesive, long-term vision for Assassin’s Creed — one that respects its lore, its themes, and its legacy.
This is why we ask Ubisoft to appoint Darby McDevitt as the Lead Narrative Director for the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise, and to ensure that all future projects pass through his oversight before reaching production. The series desperately needs a Lore Master, someone who understands its foundations, its mythology, and its potential.
We believe Darby is the right person to restore consistency, depth, and identity to Assassin’s Creed.
