ASPCA CEO Had An Astounding Salary Of $852K/yr
The Issue
We’ve all seen those sad commercials on TV of the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) asking to help dogs and cats. Won’t you give just $19 a month to the nonprofit organization to help those poor pets? The ads are effective. But where does the money actually go?
According to tax returns, ASPCA CEO Matthew Bershadker received $852,231 in 2019 and the ASPCA had over $20 million in offshore accounts! According to a Charity Navigator study, the average nonprofit CEO’s pay is $123,000. This means Bershadker’s pay is more than 6 times the average nonprofit CEO. And it’s on top of Bershadker earning over $770,000 in the previous year.
And while donations are a large part of non-profit organizations, there’s a few things that stick out with the ASPCA. The organization promises to save dogs and cats and fight for stricter laws to protect animals, but CharityWatch, an organization that rates how well non-profits follow through on their promises to donors, gives the ASPCA a mediocre, “C.” And with a rating like that, I’m confused why ASPCA’s CEO Matthew Bershadker received an annual salary of $800,000 in 2017, $770,000 in 2018, and $852,231 in 2019.
