Asking for a Fairer Tax System for Canadians

Asking for a Fairer Tax System for Canadians
The Issue
Petition to Make Tax Preparation Fees Deductible in Canada
We call on the Government of Canada to allow taxpayers to deduct tax preparation fees paid to qualified and designated accounting practitioners, including RPAs and CPAs.
Millions of Canadians rely on professional help to file accurate tax returns, especially those with complex financial situations. Tax compliance is costly, stressful, and increasingly complex, yet the cost of professional tax preparation remains non-deductible even when it helps taxpayers meet their legal obligations properly.
Allowing this deduction would reduce the financial burden on taxpayers, improve compliance, lower errors, and help reduce unnecessary CRA reviews and audits. It would also encourage Canadians to seek assistance from qualified professionals such as RPAs and CPAs, who are trained, accountable, and subject to professional standards.
Countries such as Australia already allow deductions for tax services provided by qualified professionals. Canada should adopt a similar approach to protect taxpayers, strengthen the tax system, and recognize the important public service provided by RPA and CPA practitioners.
We urge the federal government specifically Canada Revenue Agency to modernize the tax system with G7 Gold Standards by making tax preparation fees deductible when paid to qualified and designated accounting practitioners, including RPAs and CPAs.
