The Issue

Your Holiness,

With your election, you’ve inherited a voice that echoes across continents.

That’s why we come with a humble but urgent proposal: That Catholics be warmly encouraged to shift from one meatless day a week to six — with one day of rejoicing.

It’s a small change with heavenly potential. Meat production is responsible for up to one fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. When we account for deforestation, land use, and water waste, the toll on creation becomes even greater. And yet, over two billion Christians already abstain once a week — a habit of faith that, if extended, could move mountains. Cutting up to 80% of food-related emissions.

This isn’t about restriction, but renewal. A meaningful gesture that lights the way not just for Christians, but, multiplied across millions, could become one of the most powerful acts of climate stewardship in history.

A transformation rooted in tradition – a Great Lent for Climate.

We share this with deep respect and real hope — hope that you might consider it, speak to it, perhaps even bless it with a word.

We believe: New Pope. New Hope.

We, the undersigned, respectfully ask Your Holiness to consider advising fasting practices worldwide to include six meatless days each week.

With hope and gratitude.
