The Issue
As a mother of two special needs boys and someone living with a physical disability, the summer scheme programme offered by special needs schools has been an invaluable respite for my family. This programme is the only one in our area that can accommodate my children's specific needs, providing them with both care and tailored activities during the summer months.
The recent decision by the Education Authority to withdraw these summer schemes has left many families, including mine, in a state of anxiety and uncertainty. These schemes not only support the educational and social development of children with special needs, but they also offer a much-needed break for parents who juggle the demanding task of caring for their children with special needs on a daily basis. This break is crucial for the well-being of the entire family, allowing parents to recharge and attend to their own health and wellness needs.
Statistics show that consistent, quality care and engaging activities greatly contribute to the emotional and cognitive growth of children with special needs. The removal of this programme threatens to disrupt this critical support system. These children deserve an enriching and supportive environment during the summer just as much as any other child. Without the programme, many children and families may find themselves isolated, without the support network they have come to rely on.
Furthermore, the decision to cancel the summer schemes disregards the positive impact they have on the community as a whole. Volunteers and staff involved in the programme gain invaluable experience in special education and caregiving, which benefits the broader community.
My family and I, along with many others, are urging the Education Authority to reconsider this decision. We ask them to recognize the profound impact and necessity of the summer scheme programmes for special needs schools. Restoring these essential programmes will ensure that all children, regardless of their abilities, continue to have opportunities for growth and joy during the summer months.
Please sign this petition to help us advocate for the reinstatement of these crucial summer programmes. Your support will help ensure that families like ours are not left struggling to find suitable summer care and support for our children.
