Ask Mount Alexander Shire Council to join the Super Tuesday Bike Count 2027
The issue
Castlemaine is a proud cycling hub in regional Victoria.
According to the 2021 Census, 2.5% of Castlemaine commuters ride to work — that’s 3.5 times the national average. This reflects our town’s deep commitment to sustainable transport and its unique, active community spirit. And that figure doesn’t even include the many local parents, students, and residents who ride daily for school, errands, and recreation.
Why does this matter?
Good decisions rely on good data. The Mount Alexander Shire plans to collect new local transport data — but unless it aligns with state and federal standards, Castlemaine’s real cycling activity will remain undercounted where funding and infrastructure priorities are set.
A telling example is the 2025 Infrastructure Victoria report. It recognised Castlemaine’s cycling culture and safety needs, yet delayed major investment because of a low 2031 benefit‑cost ratio — an outcome that overlooks our already high cycling rates and strong community demand.
Joining the Bicycle Network Victoria Super Tuesday Bike Count in 2027 can change that.
It’s Australia’s largest, standardised cycling survey, providing reliable, comparable data that shows how much Castlemaine really rides.
By taking part, our Shire can build a stronger case for safer bike lanes, connected routes, and fair investment in cycling infrastructure that reflects our vibrant community.
Let’s make Castlemaine’s cycling culture visible — and valued.
