Thanks to Judy Putnam at Lansing State Journal, the petition has its first media coverage. And also thanks to Judy, Meijer has given their first official response despite my previous attempts through email.
In the article, Frank J. Guglielmi, senior director of communications for Meijer says its "customer base is very broad and diverse and we work hard to ensure our offerings appeal to the millions of customers who come through our doors each week. We are also passionate about offering healthy choices throughout our stores..."
I would argue that the offerings at checkout are anything but diverse - unless you consider diversity to be choosing between Coke, Pepsi and Mt. Dew. And while Meijer does offer healthy choices throughout the rest of the store, these options abruptly stop at checkout.
Also where do kids figure into this diverse customer base? Does Meijer believe kids want and benefit from tabloids and inappropriate magazine headlines at checkout?
I hope I'm wrong, but what I think Meijer is really saying is that they're putting profits over customer health. I just wish they would be honest about it.
We're going to have to show Meijer that there are thousands of customers who want healthy choices at checkout - and who want a safer, more supportive atmosphere for their children at checkout. Please help to spread the word and urge your friends and family to do the same. If we can get one large grocery store to listen, others will do the same!
Happy holidays!
Sincerely,
Jane Kramer
