We’re getting closer to 500 signatures, but we still have a long way to go before I believe Meijer will take this issue seriously. News coverage definitely helps and I’m grateful that the petition has been featured in ABC News, ABC’s Good Morning America, Detroit Free Press, Detroit Metro Times, Detroit Informer, and ABC 12 WJRT in Flint, MI. (Though GMA made it solely into a parenting issue, which it is not.) If you live outside the Lansing area or in Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky, or Indiana, I would greatly appreciate your help in asking your local news outlets to cover the story. In the meantime, there is something else I would ask of you. If you’re a Meijer customer (or even if you’re not), I would ask that you post a friendly but direct comment on Meijer’s Facebook page (or send them a direct tweet) about a specific product you would like to see at checkout in place of junk food and junk news. A picture would be ideal. You can include a link to the petition, too, if you’d like. Similarly, I would ask that you send comments/pictures of products you DON’T want to see at checkout. This is especially important in regards to images/content you see during your shopping trip that you feel is inappropriate for your child or children in general. You may notice that some magazine cover pictures are automatically marked as “sensitive content” by Facebook. (The image accompanying this petition has been marked as such.) This is because Facebook has developed a set of Community Standards. Wouldn’t it be nice if grocery stores adopted similar standards in their checkout aisles?? This would be a good point to make in your comments. It may also inspire others to join the discussion and post further comments. Meijer says it values “helping our customers lead healthier lives” and “treating each other with dignity and respect”. However, I would argue that their current checkout aisles are anything but healthy and respectful. They are filled with junk food and filled with magazines/tabloids in which we rip each other apart over weight and appearance. I’d like to see Meijer proactively support their values of HEALTH and RESPECT at checkout! How they respond to our FB posts and to this petition will tell us a lot about what kind of company they are. https://www.facebook.com/meijer/ https://twitter.com/meijer @meijer Thank you so much for your support! Sincerely, Jane Kramer
