Ask Canadian Airports, landfills to stop killing birds, deer, coyotes, and other animals!

The Issue

I am quite concerned with the requirements for a “wildlife control agent” at an airport, landfill, or mine to hold a firearm permit.  The laws thankfully does not mandate the killing of animals, but it does not forbid it either.  I sure hope the firearms are to scare animals off, rather than kill them.  https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/sor-96-433/page-22.html#h-989170

Mammals and birds are often poisoned, baited with toxins, trapped in legholds, killer traps, snares, live trapped and killed, glue trapped, gassed, drowned, and shot.

Landfill sites and mines have similar (usually cruel) wildlife management techniques.  All these policies are over 20 years old, never updated, and had no input from humane societies.

Please amend the laws to mandate that wildlife management is only done in a humane, cruelty free no kill manner, by an animal protection organization rather than a trapper, hunter or exterminator.   There are cruelty free ways to manage turkeys and other wildlife.  Recently a turkey in Toronto was rescued from a busy road.  https://youtu.be/3OTGpuNI7oE

This article from the Humane Society of the United States is an excellent resource. https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/what-do-about-wild-turkeys

Wildlife airplane strikes kill animals and humans alike.  Landfills create wildlife conflicts too.  This is why it is essential that every airport, landfill, and mine has a wildlife program.  Airports, landfills, and mines can use any legal method of animal management.  Transport Canada mandates that every airport has a “wildlife management” plan that mandates firearms training.  While this could be for non lethal humane hazing with noise, most airports, landfills, and mines trap and shoot animals.

The main airport in Vancouver kills “invasive” abandoned pet bunnies and other animals as “permanent removal”.  Killing is not a ”permanent removal”  option because more animals breed or move in.  https://www.yvr.ca/en/about-yvr/environment/wildlife-management-program

Many airports, landfills, and mines hire Falconers to fly captive bred birds of prey around.  Exploiting captive wildlife to attack free roaming wildlife is wrong on so many levels.  Wildlife injured by the hawks are killed using shears, rather than receiving veterinary care.  Falconers cruelly joke about how aggressive their birds are in an article here. https://theconcordian.com/2019/11/le-fauconnier/

They “control” coyote populations by snaring and trapping at many airports and landfills.  They “control” foxes, groundhogs, and skunks.  They also hire the province to shoot deer and turkeys, whose bodies are fed to poor people.  They also spray insecticides all over to reduce kestrel food.  They also “control” geese, beavers, starlings, cliff swallows, and ring billed gulls.  They do use some humane options like giant shiny balls in ponds, pyrotechnics and other noise, bird spikes, signs asking to not feed birds, and mowing the lawn short.  https://www.admtl.com/en/adm/communities/environmental-protection/wildlife-management

This same contractor “ethically” traps at the Pearson International Airport in Mississauga.  Coyotes are trapped and “relocated” which means legholds or snares.
 https://www.torontopearson.com/en/community/environment/healthy-environment-initiatives/wildlife-management

All staff are licensed hunters and trappers. https://www.falconenvironmental.com/wp-content/uploads/Pearson-Job-position-December-2023.pdf

Many of these animals are endangered and have no where else to go. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2023/05/airport-endangered-wildlife-conservation-management-safety/674238/

There are definitely non lethal alternatives.  Organizations likewww.coyotewatchcanada.com humane societies, non lethal companies, and wildlife rehabilitation centres can provide a non lethal option to protect both wildlife and humans.   Animal ambulances like this one can provide a rescue.  https://sar.quebec/pages/coordonnees?

Quebec is home to many animals, including coyotes.  But Airports hire trappers to “relocate” coyotes.  Many coyotes (who are leghold trapped) end up in dog hunting cages.  https://billybishop.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/CLC-35_FINAL_29-01-2020.pdf

Trapping coyotes usually involves legholds and snares, and every coyote trapped or killed leaves room for more to move in.  We would like the airports, mines, landfills, etc to stop the hunting/trapping and instead develop a Living With Coyotes program with the animal welfare organization Coyote Watch Canada.  www.coyotewatchcanada.com

Please only use non lethal ways to manage wildlife.  Please also stop safety testing aircraft on animals by impacting real birds with airplane parts.  Switch to non animal testing methods.

There are humane, non lethal ways to deal with beavers.  Here's a great resource.  https://thefurbearers.com/downloads/PDFs/Beaver%20Book%20-%202019-10-08%20The%20Fur-Bearers.pdf?fbclid=IwAR1fP2wOYQKbWREX0E5QzYBhZLf9VjwMov3p37Vh8ToW1-NeQvAoVATZhEg%0A%0A
