Ask City Utilities of Springfield to Reopen the Lake Springfield Tailwaters Access
The Issue
Lake Springfield in Missouri has long been a beloved spot for anglers and nature lovers. However, the public access to the Lake Springfield tailwaters has recently been closed. This is a huge disappointment to many who have enjoyed its benefits for years. The lack of access deprives the community of an excellent fishing spot, especially for paddlefish, Missouri's official state aquatic animal.
While we understand there are safety and security concerns at the access, we hope that a solution can be reached to reopen the access to the public in a way that is safe and can avoid negative uses. For example, City Utilities of Springfield could close the gates during flooding events and at night to improve safety and prevent access by problematic individuals, while leaving them open for public fishing on clear days during daylight hours.
A blanket ban on access due to security concerns punishes us all for the bad behaviors of a few. We urge City Utilities to take action to restore access, or at the very least to engage with the community in dialog on possible next steps to reopen the access.
Please join us in advocating for the reopening of the Tailwater Access by signing this petition. Your support can help us restore access, ensuring that everyone can once again enjoy the beauty, tranquility, and excellent fishing of Lake Springfield's tailwaters.
